Vietnam

The flag of Vietnam comprises an entirely red coloured flag with a large yellow five pointed star in the centre of the flag. The ratio of the Vietnamese flag is 2:3.

The present day Vietnamese flag design was first used in 1941 by the communist organisation Viet Minh in opposition to the Japanese occupation of Vietnam. Following World War II, Vietnam proclaimed its independence and the flag was officially adopted as the flag of North Vietnam. The flag was modifided slightly on 30 November 1955 to make the five edges of the yellow star sharper. Following the end of the Vietnam war in 1975, the flag of North Vietnam was established as the official flag of the newly unified Vietnam in 1976.

The flag's predominant colour red is said to represent bloodshood and the struggle for revolution from the Vietnamese people. The flag's star is said to represent the five classes of Vietnamese society - the workers, the peasants, the soldiers, the intellectuals and the businessmen.
