This USSR flag - officially known as the State Flag of the Union of Socialist Republics - was the official flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) spanning the years 1922 to 1991.
The USSR flag is set on a red background with a gold hammer and sickle in the upper hoist quadrant of the flag. Above the hammer and sickle sits a red star with a gold outline. The flag's main colour of red was a colour synonymous with revolution whilst the hammer and sickle was a tribute to industrialism during the Russian Revolution - the hammer representing the workers and the sickle representing the peasants. The flag's red star represents the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
The USSR flag is today used as an international symbol of the communist movement and is used in many rallies and protests.
