The flag of Uruguay - sometimes referred to as the 'Sun and Stripes' - consists of nine equal horizontal stripes alternating between the colours white and blue. The flag's canton is white and has the Sun of May sitting at its centre. The colours white and blue, as well as the Sun of May, are adopted from the Argentinian flag (Uruguay gained its independence from Argentina in 1830. The flag's 9 stripes represent the 9 departments of Uruguay. The flag of Uruguay was officially adopted on 11 July 1830. The flag was designed by Joaquin Suarez - Uruguay's first Head of State, and later President. The flag's ratio is 2:3.
