The flag of Tunisia is red with a white disk at its centre inside which sits a red crescent moon and a five pointed star. The colour red is drawn from the flag of the Turkish Empire of which Tunisia was a part of until 1881. The crescent moon and star are the traditional symbols of Islam.
The flag of Tunisia was created and first adopted by Bey Hussein II, ruler of Tunisia, in 1827. The flag was only occasionally used when Tunisia became a French Protectorate in 1881, most commonly as a sea flag with the French flag in the canton. However, upon Tunisia gaining its independence in 1956, the current version of theĀ flag was readopted as Tunisia's national flag.
The flag's ratio is 2:3.
