In the same way as LGBT communities at large have come to be represented by the rainbow flag, transgender communities have adopted their own specific flag. Part of our range of LGBT Pride flags, the flag representing the transgender community is known as the 'Transgender Pride Flag' and consists of five horizontal colours - from the top of the flag to the bottom of the flag; light blue, pink, white, pink, light blue. The Transgender Pride Flag was designed by American transgender woman Monica Helms in 1999 and was first paraded in Phoenix, Arizona in the United States of America in 2000.
The Transgender Pride Flag has specific symbolism laid out by its designer. The light blue stripes represent the traditional colour of baby boys, the pink stripes represent the traditional colour of baby girls, whilst the white stripe represents those who are transitioning or consider themselves as being of neutral or undefined gender.
