The flag of Sudan is a horizontal tricolour consisting of the colours (from the top of the flag to the bottom of the flag) red, white and black. At the hoist of the flag is a green triangle. The colours of the flag of Sudan are the Pan-Arab flag colours.
The original flag of Sudan following its independence in 1956 was a horizontal tricolour featuring the colours blue, yellow and green. However, following a coup and the formation of a new Democratic Republic, a flag design competition was held to establish a new national flag. The winning design was submitted by artist Abdel Rahman Ahmed Al-Jali and was officially adopted as the new national flag of Sudan on 20 May 1970.
The flag's ratio is 1:2.
