The flag of Spain is a tricolour flag consisting of three horizontal stripes - (from top to bottom) red, yellow and red. The yellow stripe in the centre of the flag is twice the size of the red stripe below it and the red stripe above it. Sitting in the yellow section of the flag, off centre and towards the flag hoist side, sits the Spanish Coat of Arms.
The flag of Spain is known by the name "Rojigualda" which translates to "red weld". The flag is mentioned in the Spanish Constituion of 1978. The flag's ratio is 2:3.
The current flag of Spain has its origins in the Spanish naval ensign, instituted in 1785 under Charles III, who chose the flag himself from a set of 12 different designs by Antonio Valdes y Bazan. The current version of the flag featuring the Spanish Coat of Arms was first instituted on 5 October 1981.
