The flag consists of a horizontal tricolour of (from the top of the flag to the bottom side of the flag) orange, white and blue, a design which was based on the original Dutch flag. In the centre of the flag are three smaller flags - the Union Jack placed towards the hoist side of the flag, the flag of the Orange Free State hanging vertically in the centre, and the Transvaal Veirkleur placed towards the fly side of the flag. The flag was first hoisted on 31 May 1928 and was replaced with a new design on 20 April 1994. The flag's ratio is 2:3.
