The national flag of Sierra Leone is a horizontal tricolour consisting of (from top to bottom) green, white and blue bands. The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
The flag of Sierra Leone was introduced in 1961 when Sierra Leone gained independence from Great Britain. The colours of the flag were chosen in order to best represent the country. The colour green is said to reflect the vast natural resouces of Sierra Leone, the colour white symbolises "unity and justice", and the colour blue represents the harbour of Freetown (the capital city of Sierra Leone).
Sierra Leone is a West African country which was used as a European trading colony for centuries. The name Sierra Leone has its origins in Portugese and translates to "Lion Mountains". The country was named as such by Portugese explorers in the 15th century and reflects the vast mountainous regions of Sierra Leone. From 1889 up until its independence from Great Britain in 1961, the flag of Sierra Leone included the Union Jack on it.
