The flag of Senegal is a vertical tricolour featuring the colours (from the hoist side of the flag to the fly side of the flag) green, yellow and red. At the centre of the flag is a green five-pointed star. The colours of the flag of Sengal are the widely used Pan African colours whilst the flag's design is based on that of the French flag. The flag's green star stands for hope and unity.
Senegal achieved independence from France in Federation with Mali in June 1960; however, their Federation ended in August 1960 and they each formed separate countries. The original flag of the Federation was identical to the current design except for having a black kanaga emblem in place of the green star. The new flag of Senegal was officially adoptedĀ on 20 August 1960.
The flag's ratio is 2:3.
