The flag of Nigeria is a vertical tricolour featuring the colours (from the hoist side of the flag to the fly side of the flag) green, white and green. The flag's colours of green and white are said to represent the land and peace and unity respectively.
The flag of Nigeria was officially adopted on 1 October 1960 following the country gaining its full independence from Britain. The flag design was derived from a 1959 flag design competition, although the winning entry originally included a red sun with streaming rays on the flag's white section which was ultimately removed by the judges. The winning design was submitted by a Nigerian man by the name of Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi.
The flag's ratio is 1:2.
