The flag of the Maldives is set on a red field with a green rectangle at its centre, inside which sits a white crescent moon.
The flag of the Maldives was officially adopted on 25 July 1965 following the country gaining its independence from Britain. The flag incorporates different elements of various previous flags of the Maldives which featured on its flag in the preceding decades, including the crescent moon recognising the influence of Islamic traders on the islands.
The flag's ratio is 2:3.
