The flag of Madagascar consists of two horizontal bands of red (top of the flag) and green (bottom of the flag) with a vertical white band at the hoist of the flag. The flag's colours of red and white are derived from the flag of the former Merina Kingdom whilst the flag's colour green is said to symbolise the former peasant class known as the Hova.
The flag of Madagascar was officially adopted on 14 October 1958 upon the country gaining self-government.
The flag's ratio is 2:3.
