Hungary

The flag of Hungary comprises a horizontal tricolour design of (from top to bottom) the colours red, white and green. The flag has been in official use as the country's national flag since 23 May 1957. The ratio of the Hungarian flag is 1:2.

The present day flag of Hungary has its origins in the country's national freedom movement which eventually resulted in the Hungarian Revolution of 1948. The national freedom movement was in opposition to the ruling monarchy as well as the Habsburg Empire with the goal of forming an independent republic. As a result, the Hungarian flag involves a tricolour design, drawing inspiration from the French Revolution. The colours red, white and green emanate from the middle ages where they featured on the Hungarian coat of arms. The Hungarian constitution officially states that the colour red represents strength, the colour white represents fidelity and the colour green represents hope.

The official flag day of Hungary is 16 March.
