The flag of Hong Kong comprises a white stylised five-petal Hong Kong orchid tree flower on a red field. The flag of Hong Kong was officially adopted on 1 July 1997 during the handover ceremony to mark the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom back to China (Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China on this date).
The flag of Hong Kong's red colour is similar to that of the Chinese flag - the colour red in China conveys nationalism and the choice of red for the new flag of Hong Kong in 1997 re-establishes the link between Hong Kong and mainland China. Similarly, the five petals on the orchid tree flower mirror the five stars on the Chinese flag.
The flag of Hong Kong was designed by Tao Ho. The flag's ratio is 2:3.
