Belize, formerly British Honduras, was originally a British colony formed in 1862. An unofficial national flag was adopted in 1968 - the flag was set on a blue field with the Belize coat of arms at its centre (the coat of arms of Belize dates back to 28 January 1907 and recalls the logging industry which led to Britsh settlement). The flag's blue colour represented the ruling People's United Party. Upon gaining its independence in 1981, the unofficial flag was retained (and made official on 21 September 1981) but with narrow red stripes added to the top of the flag and the bottom of the flag to represent the opposition party. The flag's ratio is 2:3.
