Australian Naval Ensign flag
The Australian Naval Ensign (also known as the Australian White Ensign or the Royal Australian Navy Ensign) is the naval ensign used by vessels in the Royal Australian Navy. The Australian Naval Ensign was first used in 1967 and has been used uninterrupted ever since. The Australian Naval Ensign was designed because, up until 1967, Royal Australian Navy vessels had been using the British White Ensign and had sometimes been mistaken for British vessels.
The Australian Naval Ensign consists of the Union Jack in the canton with a white field emblazoned with a blue Commonwealth Star and a blue Southern Cross constellation. The Australian Naval Ensign is identical to the Australian National Flag, only with the reversal in colouring of the blue field and the white stars. The ratio of the Australian Naval Ensign is 1:2.
